Dentures

Why Live with Missing Teeth?
Teeth form an integral part of the oral cavity. If you lose your natural teeth due to gum disease, decay, and trauma or if they are congenitally absent, there are varieties of options available which can replace the missing teeth and restore your smile.
Without the support of teeth the facial muscles will sag making a person look older. Replacement of missing teeth by dentures hence is essential for improved function and aesthetics.
The benefits of dentures
- Prevents existing teeth from drifting into surrounding space created by the loss of tooth.
- Helps to support the muscles of the face.
- The state of health of the Temperomandibular Joint is maintained.
Types of dentures
A. Removable Complete dentures
1) Conventional complete dentures
Conventional complete dentures are placed in the patients mouth when the tissues heal completely after the removal of teeth.
Materials used:
- Acrylic Resins.
- Metal Alloys.
- Reinforced Acrylic Resins.
- Thermoplastic materials.

2) Immediate dentures
Immediate dentures are placed at the time of removal of the last remaining teeth in the mouth. The advantage of these dentures is that the missing teeth are replaced immediately.
3) Overdentures
Overdentures are complete dentures which are given when only a few sound teeth remain in the mouth. These dentures take support from the remaining teeth and thus help the retention of the dentures.

B. Removable partial dentures
Removable partials denture or RPD's are used when some of the teeth are missing in either of the jaws. There are a few options available depending on the patient’s choice. They are:
1) A conventional partial denture
Missing teeth are replaced on a rigid acrylic base ,which resembles the gums ,with clasps which are placed on the supporting teeth.
2) A cast partial denture
- The framework of these dentures is cast to adapt the teeth.
- The denture rests on the teeth and tissues and hence improves its stability and retention.
- They are made up of a strong alloy called cobalt chrome which has adequate strength in thin sections hence the thickness of the denture is lesser than that of a conventional denture.
- Being a metal framework, it is highly polished and does not interfere with the tongue movements.
- The metal framework also helps perceive the temperature of the food and drinks.

3) Valplast
- Valplast is the latest innovations with removable partial dentures.
- These are flexible dentures which adapt to the constant movement and flexibility in the mouth.
- They are comfortable and have superior aesthetics.
- The valplast dentures are virtually invisible in the mouth as there are no metal clasps and the material appears to blend with the oral tissues.
- The valplast flexible denture is non invasive
